NYU is currently searching for standing faculty for New York University Abu Dhabi, which will open for students in the fall of 2010. There is a recent web-only advertisement in Jobs for Philosophers (vol. 180w, #288) with open rank and open area (and with some slight preference for some areas), but NYUAD and its relation to NYU New York are sufficiently distinctive that your readers might like to know more about them.

NYUAD is designed not as a regional "branch campus" or a limited stand-alone program in a particular academic or professional field, but rather as a full-scale liberal arts college, with attached research institute, that will aim to draw students and faculty from the very top of the global talent pool. (It will be located on the newly-developedSaadiyat Island, along with major new facilities of the Louvre, and the Guggenheim Museum; the Sorbonne is also building a major new facility elsewhere in Abu Dhabi.) Accordingly, it is intended that there be considerable interchange between the philosophy faculty in Abu Dhabi and the philosophy faculty in New York. For example, a philosopher hired this year for the fall 2010 start will likely have the option to spend the full 2009-2010 academic year (salaried) in the department in New York, and will likely have regular opportunities to return from Abu Dhabi for a semester every four years or so thereafter. In addition, it is intended that there be a small but fairly regular flow of New York faculty to Abu Dhabi for visits lasting from several weeks to one year. (There is also a possibility of distinguished joint faculty who would spend half of their time at each campus.) The teaching load will be three courses per year, and classes will typically be small, especially in the first years. Compensation and research support will be competitive in relation to U.S. benchmarks. There will also be housing support and educational support for children of faculty. No interviews will be held at the APA, but invited campus visits may be conducted in the new year.
